SPECIAL EXHIBITION

Wâze, Rogge, Gerschte & Hober

Wheat, rye, barley and oats - these four types of grain appear in the chapter's old economic documents and were stored in the granary.

A special measure
In the old chapter registers, grain was recorded in schett, a special measure used only in San Candido, which took into account the value of the individual types of grain: i.e. the same value, but different quantities. A schett of oats was three times as much, a schett of barley 1.75 times as much as a schett of wheat.

A document from 1828 on grain prices per starling has been preserved (one star corresponds to about half a schett). Comparing these prices, one arrives at similar ratios as with the schett: A star of barley cost 1 guilder 24, a star of wheat 2 guilders 12, i.e. 1.7 times as much. Only the oats seem to have become considerably cheaper.

Today, the differences are no longer so large and prices are determined by the world market.

An aside: For the schett there was the Chapter box measure  (slightly less) and the Governor measure (slightly more). The spiritual and secular authorities therefore used different measures.
